This means carefully deciding where light is needed, using the appropriate fixtures and lamps in each area, and avoiding glare. We use light to show what is important in the garden. By using different levels of light, we can illuminate focal points and safety hazards more brightly than less important areas. Light looks most natural when its source is hidden. We choose locations that hide or shield the fixtures so the light is seen and not the lamp. Typical techniques include downlighting, uplighting, safety lighting for walks or to give direction, moonlighting with fixtures up in trees, accent lighting, and silhouetting to name just a few. We use top quality fixtures but strive to not make them the focal point. The reason is the fixture is nothing more than a place to house the bulb. It is the light from the bulb that produces the effect, not the fixture.
